John Randolph Medical Center Earns Cancer Reaccreditation with Commendation

(HOPEWELL, VA) February 20, 2008 - The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) has granted a Three-Year Reaccreditation with Commendation to the Cancer Program at John Randolph Medical Center.

Approval by the CoC is given only to facilities that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality cancer care and have undergone a rigorous evaluation process and review of performance. A Three-Year Accreditation with Commendation is provided when a facility demonstrates a Commendation level of compliance with one or more standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program.

John Randolph Medical Center received Commendation in seven areas.

“We are proud to be recognized again for the exceptional care our medical staff provides to cancer patients,” said Bernie Boone, CEO of John Randolph Medical Center. “This designation reflects the quality of our cancer program.”

Established in 1922 by the American College of Surgeons, the CoC is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival rates and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of comprehensive, quality care.  Its membership includes Fellows of the American College of Surgeons and 42 national organizations that reflect the full spectrum of cancer care.

The American Cancer Society estimates that 1.4 million cases of cancer will be diagnosed this year. Only about 25 percent of all hospitals in the U.S. have CoC-approved cancer programs.

Receiving care at John Randolph Medical Center’s Cancer Program ensures that a patient will have access to:

  • Comprehensive care, including a range of state-of-the art services and equipment.
  • A multi-specialty team approach to coordinate the best treatment options.
  • Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options.
  • Access to cancer-related information, education, and support.
  • A cancer registry that collects data on type and stage of cancers and treatment results and offers lifelong patient follow-up.
  • Ongoing monitoring and improvement of care.
  • Quality care close to home.

John Randolph Medical Center provides individualized cancer treatment, guiding each patient through the cancer journey spiritually, emotionally, physically and psychologically.
